The fountain has a built-in water filter so your pet(s) will always have clean and healthy water. Wash the filter every now and then to prevent any fungus. Just get the filter out of the fountain and wash it by hand with a really small portion of soap. wash all the soap out of the filter before putting it back into the fountain.
The Fountain has a really low power use of 9 watts so don't worry about a use utility bill for using this fountain.
